Crop Report: Autumn Leaves, Fresh Picked Apples, and Pumpkins

Thanks for checking in this week! Yay, the leaves are starting to change! Fall is in full swing here at the Orchard and in Yellow Springs! The fall colors are beautiful. Lots of great apples to look for in our Farm Market this weekend. Full list of apple varieties to follow.

We've been busy picking apples and pressing cider this week. Our cider is pressed in small batches to ensure the highest quality. Our team works each week to create the perfect blend of flavor from the apples in season at the time.

Our Pie Mix pecks are back! This week's peck is a blend of Cortland, Melrose and Suncrisp. There are so many great all-purpose apples to choose from right now. It's time to start baking!

Have you carved your Jack O' Lantern yet? The pumpkins in our u-pick patch are simply beautiful this year! Our u-pick pumpkin patch is open seven days a week. It's going to be a perfect weekend for an afternoon stroll out to the patch, just a quick walk from our Farm Market. We also still have plenty of pumpkins up at the Farm Market for those who would prefer to grab and go.

New varieties to look for this week, Granny Smith, Pink Lady and Stayman. Here's a little more info about these varieties:

Granny Smith: Tart, crisp and firm with very mild flavor. Good all-purpose.
Pink Lady: Very firm and tart.
Stayman: Commonly confused as "Stayman Winesap". Stayman was originated from winesap seeds. Tart, crisp and juicy. Great for eating. Good all-purpose.

We've had lots of questions about when Goldrush and Winesap will be ready to harvest. We hope to start picking Goldrush next week, they still need a bit more time. Winesap is about two weeks out, we're waiting for a good frost before we harvest. We'll keep you posted!

These chilly autumn nights have us thinking soup! Halfbaked Harvest's Cheddar Apple Butternut Squash Soup is a great combination of two of our favorite fall flavors, apple and butternut squash. We're recommending Suncrisp and Melrose. Fall desserts are just the best and impossible to pass up! Cheat day every day! Pumpkin Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies are a great fall treat!
