Crop Report: Pie Apples

Thanks for checking in this week! It's hard to believe we are already heading into the holiday season. Many of you have been stopping in to gather your pie pumpkins and apples for pie baking. We have some great pie apples available in our Farm Market. Full list of apple varieties and produce available to follow.

Apple pie is one of our holiday favorites, no surprise there! When selecting apples for your next pie we recommend a mix of varieties to build flavor complexity. If you want to just grab and go, we offer a pie mix by the peck. A peck should make about 2-3 standard pies. For those who would rather make their own unique blend, here are some of our preferred pie apples:

  • Melrose, Granny Smith, Winesap, Goldrush, Suncrisp, Mutsu, Idared

Homebrewers, now is the time to make a batch of hard cider for the cold winter months. Our next batch of cider will be pressed Monday the 23rd. We would like to invite you to fill your carboys straight from the tap. Please call ahead of time, this weekend, if you intend to come in so we can press accordingly. Give us a call for details on pricing and to schedule a time.

If you're looking for a last minute Thanksgiving center piece, we still have a wide selection of baby boo pumpkins and assorted squash! It's not too late to add a festive touch to your Thanksgiving table.

There's nothing like an apple pie made with fresh seasonal apples. Here's a simple recipe that we really enjoy. As apple lovers, we find that the pie itself should be simple to really allow the blend of apple flavors to shine. Although this recipe recommends Honeycrisp, we believe that there are much better pie apples out there and this time of year there's no excuse for selling yourself short! Try a blend of Idared, Melrose and Granny Smith in this pie. Link to recipe below.

Mashed potatoes are a staple at Peifer Thanksgivings. Many of our family members would be satisfied if the meal consisted solely of mashed potatoes. Our locally grown potatoes have been a customer favorite this fall. Grab some for your Thanksgiving dinners while they are available! This recipe from Halfbaked Harvest adds a burst of flavor to traditional mashed potatoes. Recipe below.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend! We will continue to be open seven days a week until we close up for the season on December 24th.
